Frequently
Asked Questions
How
many people can fit in the sled?
The dogs can pull an average of 125 pounds each. A team of 5 or
6 huskies is capable of pulling around 650 pounds. The sled itself
has room for two adults and two small children. One adult would
ride on the runners with the driver.
Where
do I sit in the sled?
There is room in the basket as well as on the runners. We prefer
to have people on the runners so they can experience driving the
sled.
How
many people can come on one trip?
We limit our trips to 10 people. We usually have two teams running
(occasionally 3) which limits the amount of time each person will
have on the sled. Those who are not on the sled will be snowshoeing
ahead.
How
much will I be involved with the dogs?
As much as you are comfortable with. We will involve you in harnessing,
hooking up, pushing the sled up hills, and caring for the dogs when
they are resting and working.
What
Are the commands for the dogs while running them?
We say “hike” or “lets go” to start,“whoa”
to stop, “gee” to turn right, and “haw”
to turn left. These commands are standard for all draft animals.
What do the dogs eat?
They
are fed a high quality dry dog food designed specifically for sled
dogs called Red Paw that is high in fat and protein. During the
winter months they get a daily pound of fat and a table spoon of
fish oil in addition to Red Paw.
